Rates & Terms

I am happy to charge by the hour, the word or the project.

My hourly rate is $65.

My per word rate is detailed below. Regular clients enjoy the per-word rate because you pay only for what you get, and we don’t have to renegotiate each project.

On many projects, my clients prefer that I estimate how long a project will take and quote a flat fee. You pay only the fee agreed on in advance.
Terry A. Hull, freelance professional writer

My per-word rates are:

  • New content: 40¢/word.
  • Editing/rewriting existing content: 40¢/word.
  • Creative copy (ad copy, headlines, taglines, slogans, etc.): hourly rate or flat fee.

About Editing/Rewriting: When I was a novice freelancer, I charged a reduced rate for editing existing copy. I quickly learned that shaping up existing copy can take as long or longer than starting from scratch. If you can write professional copy, you don't need me. If you just need a proofreader, find a hungry college student to take a look. If your project is important to you, you need a professional writer to edit/rewrite/polish your copy. See this page: Editing/Rewrites.

Every client and every project are different, so I am flexible. Let’s talk about your project.

What is it worth to communicate your message
in a compelling
way to your target audience?

Standard turn-around time for small- and medium-sized jobs is 1 to 2 weeks, but varies depending on your project and my workload.

My quote will include a target completion date.  If you want me to rush the job, and if my schedule permits it:

20% surcharge         3 to 4 business day turn-around
30% surcharge         1 to 2 business day turn-around

• Minimum fee: $100.

25% deposit required upfront.

• Milestones.  Projects exceeding $750 billed in thirds: one-third deposit up front; one-third due after first draft; one-third due upon completion.

• If a project is killed for any reason, full payment is due for hours worked.

Installment plans possible on large projects for existing clients, if agreed upon in advance. Just ask.

• Revisions: The flat fee includes up to two rounds of revision. Additional revisions will require an additional fee. It is my job to ask the right questions and identify what you want. But it is your responsibility to take the time to give me substantive feedback to my draft. Specify me what you like, what you don't like, and how you want it to be different.

Payment may be made by check or PayPal.  Credit card payments may be made through PayPal.  Large amounts of cash in brown paper bags also accepted (large bills, please).
